The New York Aquarium

Aquarium Learning

EXPECTATIONS

Aquarium Learning App

New York Aquarium is the oldest continuously operating aquarium in the United States, located in New York City. There are 350 types of marine life in the aquarium, including 18 kinds of sharks and ray fish. The project aims to establish a connection between travelers and the ocean, by focusing on field research conducted near the waters of New York.

As a result of this project, I hope that visitors to the aquarium will gain a better understanding of fish. As a matter of fact, the goal of this project is more to allow visitors to understand the creatures of the marine world and to retain them in their minds. The effectiveness of this app will depend on whether visitors use it during their tour.

  • Two methods are used by the aquarium to introduce fish. The first is the placement of some introductions about fish on the walls or around the aquarium, while the second is the provision of smart machines in different areas to introduce tourists to marine life.
  • Despite the fact that some aquariums provide visitors with relevant apps, most visitors do not actively search for marine life after leaving the aquarium because they are no longer immersed in the environment.
  • In most aquariums, marine life is presented only in the form of 2D images. There is a large number of fish pictures available for users' reference, but there is a relatively low number of views. The reason for this is that when tourists look at the marine life in the tank, they are interested in observing their beautiful fish scales and other details.
  • Several marine life games are available in the app store, and they are very popular. It has been suggested by some reviewers that this type of game allows the player to observe interesting creatures up close. The importance of this point lies in the fact that they will be able to observe the three-dimensional fish model up close.

Design & Layout

The overall design of the APP is determined to be based on the blue ocean theme, which is in line with the style of the New York Aquarium. For the main demonstration cases, Tosakin and Siamese Fighting Fish were selected after screening the biological species in the museum.

There are two functions to the system. The first one is navigation guidance. Visitors can get confused by simple flat navigation, so choosing a fish to guide them can also be fun. A second benefit is that visitors can learn about each fish and see their appearance up close.

The aquarium will provide cards of different marine life in each area, so the visitors will scan each card to understand the knowledge of the creature.

information

The visitors can see the shape of the fish close up. Also, there is an introduction at the bottom of the screen, so they can know more information about each fish.
